Energy Aggregation Program Drives Over 19% Savings for Participating Healthcare Members
Local GPO collaborates with Zenith Energy and Hospital Energy to improve energy services for its members

SYRACUSE, NY – United Iroquois Shared Services (UISS), the for-profit division of the Iroquois Healthcare Association (IHA) and local group purchasing organization, has saved participating healthcare members more than $1 million on energy market contracts by facilitating an aggregation program based on best practices in energy procurement. On average, UISS members participating in the program have experienced savings of 19.5% on electricity supply and 22.3% on natural gas supply.

“Energy represents a significant spend for healthcare entities across the nation,” said Gary J. Fitzgerald, President & CEO of UISS and IHA. “We saw an opportunity to save our members money if they bought energy together. We are pleased to offer such a program relying heavily on the expertise of Hospital Energy and Zenith Energy. Every dollar saved is a dollar that can be reinvested to improve healthcare in the community.”

David Dermady, Director of Supply Chain for UISS and IHA member, Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown, New York, commented, “The fact that UISS has now sponsored an energy program gave me the assurance that I needed to participate. We have been able to reduce our energy supply costs by 15% and had the support needed to allow us to focus on improving [patient] care.”

The program uses analytics to guide a financially managed approach to the market, including leading-edge statistical forecasting, aggregation of member spend to drive down supplier margins by as much as 60%, and alignment of traditional and renewable energy purchasing under a common strategy.

“I am proud to serve UISS members and we will continue the stellar experience that these clients have received over the years and work to enhance the experience moving forward,” said David C. Wiers, President of Zenith Energy.
